Extremely unhappy! I got sold accident insurance through Hugo Wright last year with the intention of going part time and travelling to Australia on a working holiday visa, I work in a dangerous industry and this was needed if I was to be doing my job travelling and or just part time in the UK. We went through my plans of travel and the cover all over the phone, and was told this will work for me, and I was happy with the policy so I took it, I also know a lot of people who were also using the same insurance at the time, so I presumed they knew what they were selling me.
A short while after I got the insurance I went travelling to Australia and was working whilst travelling. Unfortunately I got injured and broke my back in 2 places, so I made my claim, and it was denied because in the small print it states that a UK resident only applies if I am out of the UK for no more than six months. This was never mentioned to me when I was sold the insurance, and they knew I could potentially be there for up to a year. The injury was only a couple months in, but because I had no return flight booked and physically couldn’t get home within 6months I didn’t get any payout.
The team was very helpful at first and did everything they could to try and get my claim approved, but as soon as they knew i wasn’t getting anything, they didn’t want to know me. But I also realised that when I first rang up about the problem they started to state that they aren’t sure if they would have gone over that with me. Meaning they made a mistake, but I did this over call, so there is no evidence of this.
So I made a complaint the the company, and they denied that I went over my plans with them when I was sold the insurance, and that was that, didn’t care and didn’t want to know in any way.
I do realise I should have read through all of the small print myself, which I did do, but not thoroughly enough. But a big shame that I got sold it with Hugo Wright not even knowing the policy properly.
Basically they covered their backs by doing everything over the phone, I should have done it all by email so that there was proof. But when I got injured I just needed quick help, so the phone was the quickest and best way.
