Popped in to look at the Middle Earth display. Nice, but then a lovely lady came out and gave us a fantastic talk and tour of the guild Hall theatre. A comprehensive talk about its history and the planned closure and restoration work. Go visit now a closing for a few years in February 2025.
Thanks Julie.

Around 600 years old, the modest facade of this Grade 1 listed building belies what is inside. The oldest and largest complete medieval Guildhall in England, its enormous beams are from Norfolk oak and the ceiling is worth seeing. Just beautiful. And it may claim being the only standing building where Shakespeare acted.
Worth seeing or better to attend a performance.

A Grade 1 listed building, is use by 1428, St George’s is the oldest and largest complete medieval Guildhall in England. The earliest record of a theatrical production was in 1445, and recent academic research has supported local tradition that Shakespeare himself played here with the Earl of Pembroke’s Men in 1593 when London theatres were closed by the plague. Robert Armin, Shakespeare’s leading comic actor, was born in King’s Lynn in 1565.

Going forward, the aim of The Shakespeare’s Guildhall Trust is to create a multi-disciplinary theatre and mixed arts venue to introduce visitors to the building.
