For a while now I have contemplated embarking on the pilgrimage to the infamous NatWest hole. Recently I have been in Europe and have seen amazing forms of architecture with my own eyes such as the Duomo and Colosseum. Despite this, the first time I locked eyes on the infamous hole in the wall it was like my life was suddenly given meaning that no other piece of architecture has ever given to me. As I stared through the hole and could see through to the other side, it really resonated with me on a philosophical level. After all, life is like a brick wall but sometimes filled with holes and imperfections. The great thing about the location of this local landmark is the small town in which it is situated in. Your day does not start and end with only the wall. I recommend you grab a coffee from the Greggs just opposite and take a leisurely stroll to Victoria Park. I had the luxury of witnessing live entertainment as one of the dogs from Paw Patrol was walking around! End your day at the Wetherspoons and a smile. With parking being just £1 for 3 hours it is a quality day out.

As I approached this 5+stars wonder.. I immediately saw why. As I made my way up the oversized hill (could do with flattering somewhat for disabled visitors!!) there was a shimmering haze around the hole, a ray of sunlight reflecting the inner rim, almost beckoning to me!! I tentatively approached, (luckily it was a quiet day for visitors and I was alone ) able to marvel at this wonder! (Does anyone know how to apply for status as an eighth wonder of the world?) Anyhow, I looked through, round, under and above. Even touching the magnificent brick work, feeling so small and insignificant in its beauty. and the convenience of having an actual 'hole in the wall ' next to it (genius) I was happy to withdraw some cash and continue drinking copious amounts of absinth. Heavenly day!!!

A truly surreal experience, both the void and the sense of perfection transcend all expectations.

Arrived into Heathrow this morning back from a business trip in Berlin and after reading an article in the Flight supplement decided to drive direct to Ilkestons No1 attraction..wow, the queue was half way down the high Street..as I was in a rush, I showed the security my plane ticket and slipped them a 20 (each!!!!!)....I got VIP treatment and was escorted to the front away from the peasants moaning and groaning...as I stood by the hole I was overcome by a wave of happiness and joy...when I actually put my hand inside, you may not believe this but my pain just melted away....the knowing look from head security underlined the situation,.
Sadly the pain returned when I pulled my hand back..
Truely an amazing place ..Will definitely return

I have fond memories of frequently climbing through and sitting inside The Hole when I was much younger, on every visit I made to Ilkeston; sadly I moved to London and consequently regular visits to this national landmark became difficult.

I am so glad to be moving back to Derbyshire in the very near future, primarily to be within a reasonable commuting distance to The Hole. I am looking forward to being able to climb through The Hole regularly; unfortunately I am no longer able to sit inside it.

My only wish is that The Hole would be a little bigger.

The last time I wept at something so life changing and profound was when I saw the shroud of Turin. It is astonishing to see the locals walk past so nonchalantly, it must take all their willpower to keep their eyes dry. The hole is a modern wonder, so glad I made the pilgrimage from East Anglia, next year I'll do it barefoot.

I've finally seen the hole of Ilson!
Afraid 3 star is the best I can rate it, I reckon 5 star is a little bit over the top. Also it was cold and windy when I went, and the hole was drafty. It could maybe be improved by filling it in to make if less drafty, or better still, move it inside the bank. This would also get rid of health and safety issues with the huge difference in height between the 2 sides of the hole. If it were inside it could be made into a safe wall. The bank could truly become self service then.
PS A bank spokesperson had previously told me it was an historic mould for making wheels.
